That's the first time I've heard that one, Kosmo, but it's so true and still extremely relevant today. I'd say my absolute favorite quote by John would have to be "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace", which is also relevant today. I miss John very much, we lost him way too early.

My favorite quote defining the sixties is from William Shakespeare:

I was there, in Berkeley, at the beginning...Great way to meet slutty girls, score free pot, and give the finger to the establishment....The only thing different about this generation of egocentrics is that they had television...

I was born in 1964 but somehow I remember a lot about the things that were going on. It was the 70's and 80's and part of the 90's that I forget! These were great quotes and I admire many of the people who said them. Great hub.

For starters, Jim, accept the comments of maven101 with a healthy grain of salt. Larry has contributed many wise and thought-inspiring things to HubPages; this is not one of them. (I guess I should add, "In my opinion.")
The 60's was a time when the common person was given a peek into the world of possibility. That world was a place where one's true identity could exist, a place where individuals could contemplate a future shaped by their own dreams and talents.
It's unfortunate that all the beautiful minds from that era were given just a brief peek. "The establishment" couldn't see a way to control the infinite potential of free thought. So, with police batons and corporate-influenced information sources, they hammered shut the peephole through which the 60's generation was looking. All those individuals are now mashed into a faceless, banausic soup classified in our economic system as "the consumer".

Yes, and the hippies are why America has become a weaker nation morally. They are the trash which help to destroy the family bond with their love of birth control, welfare policies and anti military tactics. They are the ones who have been coverted by members of the New Left which hate the American economics and politics.

I was born in 1948 so YES I was part of the Power To The People Generation. Bell bottoms, tie dye t-shirts, hip huggers, beads, long hair,hash, weed, LSD and more.
