Gifts That Men Need
Studies have shown that when it comes to gift giving, what men and women want are completely different. While women often lean toward gifts that show public affection, gifts for men are usually better served when they are practical and reflect the man's personality. Keeping this in mind, it's important to realize that gifts for the man that has it all don't necessarily need to be perishable items designed for one time use, rather usable for extended periods of time. The key to buying gifts for men is to select something that makes the person say "wow I didn't even think I needed that".
When purchasing gifts for the man in your life, pay attention to how he defines himself as a person and the accomplishments he's proud of. In addition to practical items, men like gifts that reflect their accomplishments and distinguish them from the pack. If your guy is an outdoors man, it might be wise to check out some gifts that will either reflect that aspect of his personality or help him enjoy the outdoors. You don't have to pretend to know anything (or care) about hunting, but realizing that this is what interests him will make gift giving much easier.
While jewelry might be a great gift, it's not always what men want. As discussed earlier, gift giving to men is much different than gift giving to women. Men generally don't prefer accessories, but rather a practical item that serves a purpose and makes their life easier. Whether its a wine bottle holder or a Swiss army knife, remember the next time you're shopping for the man in your life to think about what he would want instead of what you think would look good on him.
What's the Occasion?
Depending on the occasion, men want different things. Important events in their life mark different roads they will need to traverse. Graduation from college means that they will be joining the workforce and that they will need items to accommodate them. A nice suit for that occasion might be useful, or anything else that will help with job interviews and his style. If he is to be a groomsman in a wedding, a nice watch or tie clip might be the way to go.
If he already has these type of objects, why not get some of them personalized? As mentioned earlier, men enjoy gifts that celebrate them as person and set them apart from the crowd. Many different gift outlets allow for personalized engraving or other ways to make the gift unique. Personalizing a gift can make it a family heirloom; something that can be passed down throughout generations and cherished for years to come.
Before agonizing over buying gifts for men, think carefully about what the occasion is and how you can make it special. For holiday parties, a wine bottle holder that reflects their interests might be just the thing that they hadn't thought about. Items that decorate their personal office or room can be a great way for men to get excited about receiving gifts. While women enjoy showing off accessories that their man got them, men enjoy decorating their personal abode with items that reflect their interests and make their dwelling completely unique. Many decorative gifts can also be personalized to fit their interests, which almost guarantees a home run when it comes to purchasing mens gifts.
Ballin' On a Budget
When it comes to gifts for men, it's not necessarily about the money spent, but the quality and practicality of the gift. For example, if there's something your man needs in order to enhance his image, look into buying that. If he's got a Velcro wallet from the 1980s, and is embarrassed every time he whips it out, think about replacing it with an inexpensive, yet class leather wallet. If his shoes are ripped and torn from years of use, think about replacing them. Men might not seem like they care about their self-image all of the time, but it is something they take pride in.
During special occasions such as Father's Day, if the kids don't have enough money to each purchase a gift for dad, try pooling their money together to buy one gift. Although tokens of appreciation are always enjoyed, it's the practical items that will make mens gifts successful and memorable. Whether it's their birthday or just a random special occasion, try to focus on practical gifts for the right price. With so many different gifts for men out there, ask some questions and find out what the man in your life actually needs.
Keep in mind that since price isn't really an issue, that you can save a lot of money by purchasing high quality goods on sale or from the web. If you haven't got time to go searching for the perfect gift at local stores, read up on some reviews on the Internet and see what types of mens gifts are popular at the current time. Buying gifts for men is never a simple task, but with the right information and research, it doesn't have to be the headache that it once was.

This is a very thoughtful way to look at gifting. I have been married for 26 years and it is hard to buy a gift for my husband. He used be an avid golfer so I would often buy him golf stuff. Now he hasn't played in years and we tend to either skip gift giving all together or get something like a CD or something. I am going to use these ideas for Father's Day with our children - I'll let you know what we get.
